The generally poor soils of North Devon were subject to
improvement through liming wherever supplies of the raw materials could
be imported easily. Generally this meant stone brought in by sea.
There are good examples of kilns to be found on the coast
and along the estuaries, some of which are in remarkably good state
of repair.
